To introduce myself as the resident artist for this project, I created a short artist talk video that students and staff watched. I showed images of my mixed media work and murals and explained that we would work together to combine those mediums into an artwork for their school. They then learned about collage, and each were given an paper oak tree leaf template and magazines to create their own collage leaf to apply to the tree. There are nearly 800 leaves!
Because of the awkward space (a narrow hallway with a steeply slanted wall) and the organic subject matter of an old oak tree, I opted to freehand the design using a piece of graphite (as opposed to projecting it). I had a group of student helpers paint and apply the leaves using clear acrylic medium. The final result is a one-of-a-kind collaborative mural that turned an ordinary stairwell into a magical and memorable immersive art experience!
